New research suggests that people who stop using blockbuster GLP-1 drugs like Wegovy and Mounjaro can put back on shed pounds at a significantly accelerated pace than those who end conventional diet and exercise regimens.
Published data in a major medical journal points out that while obese individuals frequently drop substantial amounts of their body weight while using the jabs, the mass is regained at an average rate of 0.8 kg per month upon discontinuation.
"Users using these medications need to be aware of the potential of rapid rebound weight gain when the medication is stopped," cautioned expert Dr. Susan Jebb.
Such speed of regain implies a return to pre-treatment weight within about 18 months.
Analyzing Treatments
The study, which reviewed 37 of studies involving over 9,000 of participants, compared the results of these new drugs with conventional dieting.
Scientists note that people who lose weight through lifestyle changes alone usually see a more gradual weight regain—approximately 100 grams monthly—once they finish.
The Reason for the Rapid Regain
Nutrition scientists suggest the mechanism of the jabs explains the amplified rebound.
These medications mimic a body's own chemical called glucagon-like peptide-1, which controls appetite.
"Sustained high doses of the hormone concentrations far above than normal may cause the system to generate a reduced amount of its own natural hormone, and may also reduce responsiveness to its effects," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics researcher.
"Discontinuation of this hormone supplement results in hunger is uncontrolled, making overeating far more likely."
A Lifelong Disease?
The NHS recommend the injections for individuals with weight-linked health risks, accompanied by recommended diet and exercise modifications.
A number of clinicians argue that, considering the high risk of relapse, the therapy is often long-term.
This view is supported by drug manufacturers, who say that the findings "underscore the chronic character of obesity," similar to managing conditions like diabetes.
User Experiences
Users who have stopped the jabs explain a sudden resurgence of hunger.
"It felt as if a trigger activating and you become starving," described a patient.
This challenge is compounded if patients have not established lasting lifestyle or habit changes during treatment.
Significant Adoption
Figures show that millions of adults in the UK have tried weight-loss jabs in the past year, with interest continuing to grow.
- Use is higher among females than men.
- The middle-aged age group shows the greatest usage rates.
- A large proportion access the medications through private healthcare rather than the NHS.
Ultimately, researchers emphasize that while the jabs are potent tools for shedding pounds, they are not a magic cure and lasting health benefits likely depends on ongoing behavioural changes.
